Monmouth County Horse Country

Lots & Land in Cream Ridge, NJ

Welcome to Cream Ridge, a rural Upper Freehold Township community in western Monmouth County known for horse farms, farmland, and its namesake winery.

Cream Ridge is a rural community in Upper Freehold Township, in the western reaches of Monmouth County, New Jersey. It is an unincorporated area and census-designated place with a 2020 population of 630, set among rolling fields and farmsteads on Freehold sandy loam soil. The township bills itself as the heartland of New Jersey, and Cream Ridge embodies that identity: it is one of the last sizable stretches of working farmland in a county otherwise defined by suburban development and the Jersey Shore. The community's defining feature is its equestrian culture. Cream Ridge has long been a hub of New Jersey's horse country, anchored by Standardbred breeding and training operations. Fair Winds Farm, a 600-acre breeding facility in the Cream Ridge section of Upper Freehold, boards, breeds, and sells mares, foals, and yearlings, and is home to the Hogan Equine Clinic, an internationally known equine surgery and care practice. Alongside the horse farms, the area supports vineyards, nurseries, and other agricultural uses that give the landscape its open, pastoral character. County Route 539 runs through the community and carries most local traffic, with small businesses clustered along the road. The Cream Ridge Winery, opened by the Amabile family in 1988, draws visitors for tastings of its grape and fruit wines. Residents enjoy the quiet of the countryside while remaining within reach of the region's employment centers: Trenton lies to the west, the Jersey Shore to the east, and the borough of Allentown, with its shops and restaurants, is just a short drive north. Cream Ridge suits those who want acreage, a rural pace, and access to the equestrian world, all within commuting distance of central New Jersey's larger towns.
