Sea Girt is a borough on the Jersey Shore in southern Monmouth County, New Jersey, directly on the Atlantic Ocean between Spring Lake to the north and Manasquan to the south. Covering just over one square mile, the borough had a population of 1,866 in the 2020 census, making it one of the smaller and lower-density municipalities along this stretch of coast. Its motto, "Where the Cedars Meet the Sea," captures the combination of ocean beach and wooded, tree-lined residential streets that defines its character. The borough's most prominent landmark is the Sea Girt Lighthouse, which flashed its first light on December 10, 1896 and could be seen fifteen miles at sea. It was built at a time when Manasquan Inlet, just south of the borough, was regarded as one of the area's best harbors of refuge. The lighthouse remains a preserved historic site and the center of local civic and cultural events. Sea Girt is also home to the New Jersey National Guard Training Center, a large state facility that occupies a substantial campus along the borough's western edge and hosts the National Guard Militia Museum of New Jersey. Sea Girt is overwhelmingly residential, with a mix of older homes and a compact, walkable layout oriented toward the beach. The borough operates its own small school district — Sea Girt Elementary School, a National Blue Ribbon K-8 school — and sends high school students to Manasquan High School in the neighboring district. For residents, Sea Girt offers a quiet, established shore setting with an ocean beach, historic landmarks, and easy access to the dining, marinas, and downtowns of Spring Lake, Manasquan, and the wider Monmouth County coast.
