Monmouth County Peninsula Borough

For Sale in Rumson, NJ

Welcome to Rumson, an affluent Monmouth County borough on the peninsula between the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers, near the Jersey Shore.

Rumson is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, occupying a peninsula between the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers near the mouth of the bay, a short distance inland from the Jersey Shore. Its name is thought to derive from the Lenape word "Navarumsunk," and the area was settled in 1665, though the borough was not formally incorporated until 1907. Once a prominent summer colony for well-to-do families, Rumson evolved into one of Monmouth County's most desirable residential communities and an upscale commuter suburb of New York. The 2020 census recorded a population of about 7,340 within a compact 5.2-square-mile area. Rumson is best known for its many large 19th-century estates that line the Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers and the historic Rumson Road, along with the Oceanic Village District, a concentration of late-1800s and early-1900s homes. This architectural legacy, combined with mature trees, generous lots, and abundant water frontage, gives the borough a distinctive character that sets it apart from nearby shore towns. Education is a central draw. Students attend the Rumson School District through eighth grade and then Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School, which serves both Rumson and the neighboring borough of Fair Haven. The schools are a major reason families choose the community. Life in Rumson revolves around the water, with boating, sailing, and river recreation, plus easy access to ocean beaches and the Seastreak ferry for commuters bound for Manhattan. The borough lies within the New York metropolitan area, roughly forty to fifty miles south of the city, and its residents include commuters who value the combination of a historic waterfront suburb, strong schools, and a short route to the region's employment centers.
