Ortley Beach is an oceanfront community on the Barnegat Peninsula, a narrow barrier island in Ocean County, New Jersey, that lies within Toms River Township. Officially recorded as Dover Beaches South, it is an unincorporated community and census-designated place rather than an independent municipality. Its footprint is small — less than one square mile — and it is framed by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and Barnegat Bay to the west, with the borough of Lavallette immediately to the north and Seaside Heights to the south. The community's defining feature is its beach: a mile-long stretch of public ocean shoreline, guarded by lifeguards from Memorial Day through Labor Day, that draws thousands of visitors each summer. A boardwalk fronts part of the beach, and Ortley's position just north of Seaside Heights puts the region's amusement piers, rides, and boardwalk attractions within easy walking distance. This has made Ortley Beach a long-standing summer destination, with a tradition of seasonal rentals and vacation homes layered over a growing year-round population of about 1,330 residents. Ortley Beach's recent history has been shaped by Hurricane Sandy, which struck in 2012. The storm's surge breached protective dunes and flooded virtually every home in the community, leaving Route 35 buried in sand and debris. In the years since, Ortley Beach has rebuilt extensively, often with elevated, storm-resistant construction, and the recovery reshaped much of its housing stock. Today the community balances its seasonal, beach-town character with a more substantial year-round presence, all within the municipal services and school system of Toms River Township.
