New Egypt is an unincorporated community and census-designated place located within Plumsted Township, in Ocean County, New Jersey. Situated in the rural, inland portion of the county, it stands apart from the barrier-island and bayfront communities that define the Jersey Shore to the east. The community's population was recorded at 2,357 in the 2020 census, and it functions as the principal village and commercial center of Plumsted Township, a municipality of roughly 39 square miles that also includes smaller localities such as Archertown, Brindle Park, Head of Woods, and Woodruff. The name "New Egypt" is said to reflect the area's early grain production, which reminded settlers of the fertile lands of the Nile delta, a nod to the agricultural abundance that has long defined this part of New Jersey. Farming remains a visible part of the landscape, with cultivated fields, orchards, and equestrian properties surrounding the village. The nearby Colliers Mills Wildlife Management Area, part of New Jersey's Pine Barrens, adds thousands of acres of forest and wetlands for hunting, fishing, and hiking, reinforcing the community's open, natural setting.
