Monmouth Beach is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, on the Jersey Shore in the state's central coastal region, set between the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Shrewsbury River to the west. It sits just south of Sea Bright and north of Long Branch, on the barrier spit of the lower Sandy Hook peninsula. With roughly 3,200 residents, it is a small, almost entirely residential borough whose character has remained quiet and understated through more than a century of shore development. The borough's history reaches back to the colonial "Wardell's Beach" tract, which also encompassed what became Long Branch and Sea Bright, and Monmouth Beach and Sea Bright shared a common identity for about two centuries before separating in the late nineteenth century. The area's Gilded Age glory years, roughly 1870 to 1920, brought wealthy families seeking a quieter alternative to the bustling resort of Long Branch, and that residential, low-key legacy still defines the borough today. Monmouth Beach's geography gives it a dual waterfront identity. The Atlantic Ocean and the Sea Bright–Monmouth Beach Seawall form its eastern edge, providing ocean beach and the protection of the 4.7-mile seawall, while the Shrewsbury River runs along its west, offering calm water for sailing, kayaking, and fishing. This combination of ocean and river access is unusual among Jersey Shore towns and underpins the community's recreational life. Public education is provided by the Monmouth Beach School District through eighth grade, with high school students attending Shore Regional High School alongside those of several neighboring shore communities.
