Millville is the second-largest city in Cumberland County, sitting in New Jersey's southwestern corner where the Maurice River meets the farmland and pine woods of the Delaware Bay region. The Maurice River and the broad Union Lake—created by damming the Maurice and Mill rivers—run through and alongside the city, shaping its layout and much of its recreation. Millville shares its county with the farms and bayside communities of South Jersey, but it reads as its own distinct place, an older industrial city wrapped around a working river. Millville's identity is inseparable from glass. Its first glass factory opened in 1806 under James Lee, and South Jersey's silica sands made the region a center of American glassmaking. In 1888, pharmacist Theodore C. Wheaton began making bottles in Millville, building what became Wheaton Industries and cementing the city's nickname, "Glasstown." For much of the 20th century, the glassworks and related manufacturing employed much of the city, and that industrial base shaped its dense downtown and its civic life. WheatonArts, a nonprofit arts and history campus built around Wheaton's restored glassworks, keeps that legacy alive as a museum of American glass and a working studio center where artisans still demonstrate the craft. That heritage now anchors a distinct arts economy. The Glasstown Arts District, a state-designated arts hub along High Street and the riverfront, fills renovated 19th- and 20th-century buildings with galleries, studios, shops, and restaurants, and hosts a Third Friday event series that brings live music and open studios to the downtown each month. New Jersey Motorsports Park on the city's edge draws racing events and track-day visitors from across the region, adding a second, very different kind of destination. With about 27,000 residents, Millville blends a working-class manufacturing past with a growing reputation as a cultural destination. New Jersey Route 55 and Route 47 connect it north to Philadelphia and southeast toward the Jersey Shore, while the Maurice River, Union Lake, and surrounding wildlife areas keep the outdoors close at hand for anglers, boaters, and hikers. The result is a city that offers historic downtown character, waterfront recreation, and regional highway access in one place.
