Jamesburg is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, entirely surrounded by Monroe Township and located within the New York metropolitan area near the New Jersey Turnpike. The 2020 census counted 5,783 residents. Before European settlement, the area around Lake Manalapan was occupied and fished by the Leni Lenape, whose name for the lake translates to "Land of Good Bread." The borough takes its name from James Buckelew, a nineteenth-century farmer, businessman, and miller whose milling operation became the nucleus of the community. Buckelew's mansion, known as Lakeview, still overlooks Lake Manalapan. Jamesburg was formed as a borough by referendum in March 1887, with its incorporation later confirmed in 1915. Today Jamesburg is a dense, largely owner-occupied suburban borough with a walkable downtown. Its housing stock is older and predominantly single-family, with multifamily options near the center, reflecting more than a century of development within a compact footprint. Public education is provided by the Jamesburg Public Schools through eighth grade, after which students attend Monroe Township High School in the neighboring Monroe Township School District. The borough's defining advantage is its location at Exit 8A of the New Jersey Turnpike, which places it directly on the region's principal north-south corridor. Commuters can reach New Brunswick, Princeton, and the employment centers of central New Jersey quickly, while New York City and Philadelphia are accessible by car or connecting rail. Surrounded on all sides by the larger and more sprawling Monroe Township, Jamesburg stands out as a self-contained, small-scale community. Combined with its lake, its historic mansion, and its compact layout, Jamesburg offers a neighborly setting at the heart of one of New Jersey's busiest corridors, where residents can walk to local shops and reach the wider region in minutes.
