Hammonton is a town in Atlantic County, New Jersey, that calls itself the "Blueberry Capital of the World." With a population of about 14,710, it sits roughly halfway between Philadelphia and Atlantic City, surrounded by the blueberry farms that have long defined its economy and identity. The town's agricultural heritage is genuine. Around 80 percent of New Jersey's blueberries come from Atlantic County farms located in or directly around Hammonton, and the town's identity is inseparable from the blueberry harvest. The nickname reflects both the scale of local production and the community's long association with the crop. Hammonton's character was also shaped by a wave of Italian immigration that began around the turn of the twentieth century.
