Flemington is a borough in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, and serves as the county seat. It lies in the Amwell Valley along the South Branch of the Raritan River, which flows through the center of town, while the northwestern edge of the borough rises onto the Hunterdon Plateau. With a population of 4,876 at the 2020 census and a land area of just over one square mile, Flemington is a compact, walkable town at the center of a largely rural county. The borough is best known nationally as the site of the 1935 trial of Bruno Richard Hauptmann for the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby — an event long remembered as the "Trial of the Century." The Hunterdon County Courthouse still anchors the town, and the red-brick, mansard-roofed Union Hotel, built in 1878, stands across the street as a reminder of the media spectacle that once filled its rooms.
