Farmingdale is a small borough in Monmouth County, in central New Jersey, incorporated in 1903 from portions of Howell Township. It covers roughly half a square mile and had a population of 1,504 at the 2020 census, making it one of the county's more compact municipalities. The borough sits in a lightly developed, semi-rural pocket of Monmouth County, surrounded by Howell Township and within easy reach of the county's larger suburban and shore communities. Farmingdale's defining asset is its proximity to Allaire State Park, a large state park best known for the Historic Village at Allaire, a restored nineteenth-century ironmaking town, and the Pine Creek Railroad's antique steam trains. The park's nearly 20 miles of trails, its access to the Manasquan River and nearby Manasquan Reservoir, and its mix of history and open space make it a regional destination that sits practically at the borough's doorstep.
