Revolutionary War Crossroads
Lots & Land in Englishtown, NJ
Welcome to Englishtown, a compact Monmouth County borough steeped in Revolutionary War history and home to one of the region's largest weekend flea markets.
Englishtown is a borough in western Monmouth County, New Jersey, set within the Raritan Valley region of central New Jersey. With a population of about 2,300 and a compact footprint of roughly half a square mile, it is one of the smaller municipalities in the county, surrounded on all sides by the much larger Manalapan Township, with which it shares schools and much of its daily life. The borough's most significant chapter is its role in the American Revolution. In June 1778, the Continental Army marched through Englishtown on its way to the Battle of Monmouth, one of the war's pivotal engagements. The Village Inn, which still stands at the heart of historic Englishtown, served as a gathering place during that campaign, and the borough remains tied to the preserved battlefield at Monmouth Battlefield State Park, an 1,818-acre state park on the Manalapan-Freehold border where visitors can hike the historic ground and follow the events of the battle. Englishtown is equally well known for its market tradition. The Englishtown Auction, one of the largest open-air weekend markets in the United States, has operated for more than 80 years and draws more than 300 vendors selling antiques, collectibles, and general merchandise every weekend. The market's longevity has made Englishtown a household name across the region and gives the borough a steady flow of weekend visitors. Education is provided through the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, with high school students served by the Freehold Regional High School District. Transportation runs along nearby Route 9 and Route 33, with access to the New Jersey Turnpike and NJ Transit bus service, placing Englishtown within commuting reach of Freehold, Princeton, and the broader central New Jersey corridor while it retains a small, historically layered character of its own.
